Video compressor

Drop a video and make its file smaller. Pick a quality and a picture size, or type the largest file size you need. The tool shows the size before and after. It runs in your browser, so the video never leaves your device.

Drop a video to compress

It stays on your device. Nothing is uploaded.

How to compress a video

  1. Add your video

Drop a video in the box above, or choose the file. MP4, MOV and WebM videos work in most browsers.

  2. Choose how to compress

Compress by quality: pick Smallest, Balanced or High quality, and a picture size. Or compress by file size: type the largest size you need, for example the limit of an email or a chat app. The tool shows the size it expects.

  3. Compress and download

Press Compress video. The tool writes a new MP4 file and shows its size next to the size of your video. Play it to check it, then download it.

Frequently asked questions

Is my video uploaded?

No. The compressor reads and writes the video in your browser. Nothing is sent to Vidova or anywhere else.

How does it make the file smaller?

It encodes the picture again with fewer bits a second, as H.264 in browsers that can write it, and the sound as AAC at 128 kbps, or 96 kbps for a very small file. A smaller picture size needs far fewer bits, so 720p often looks better than 1080p at the same file size.

How exact is the file size?

The tool aims for the size you type. The encoder in your browser decides the final bits, so the file can end up a little larger or smaller. When it is too large, compress the new file again with a smaller size.

Why is my file not smaller?

Some videos are already compressed well. A preset never asks for more bits than your video has, but the new file can still be close to the original. Pick Smallest or a smaller picture size.

Which files can I compress?

Any video your browser can play, up to 2 GB. The result is always an MP4 file.
