How long should a TikTok or YouTube Short be? Limits and pay (2026)

TikTok pays only for videos of at least 1 minute. YouTube Shorts run up to 3 minutes and earn from views, not length. The limits, the pay rules and what studies found.

The short answer

For TikTok's Creator Rewards Program, a video must be at least one minute long, so make 1 to 3 minute videos if you want rewards. YouTube Shorts have no minimum length to earn money. They can run up to 3 minutes, but a Short over one minute that contains claimed content cannot earn. Without a pay goal, short works: a 2026 study found the highest TikTok engagement rate under 30 seconds.

Key takeaways

  • TikTok: record up to 10 minutes in the app and upload up to 60 minutes. Creator Rewards pays only for videos of at least one minute.
  • YouTube Shorts: up to 3 minutes, square or vertical. The YouTube Partner Program counts Shorts views, not Shorts length.
  • A Short over one minute that contains claimed content, such as a popular song, is not eligible for monetization.
  • Socialinsider, 8 million brand TikToks in 2026: videos under 30 seconds had the highest engagement rate, and views rose with length up to 3 minutes.

How long should a TikTok be?

TikTok's support page on camera tools says videos you record in TikTok can be up to 10 minutes long and videos you upload can be up to 60 minutes long. If you pick a sound before you record, the length of the sound sets the length of the video.

For pay, the rule is one minute. TikTok's Creator Rewards Program page lists videos that are at least one minute long as both an eligibility rule and a video requirement. The US program terms, updated July 20, 2026, count only videos with a duration of at least 1 minute. A 59-second video earns nothing from the program, however many views it gets.

Each video also needs at least 1,000 qualified For You feed views. A qualified view comes from a unique viewer, lasts more than 5 seconds and excludes paid, promoted and fraudulent views. So the first 5 seconds decide whether a view counts at all.

The program does not count Duets, Stitches, looping videos, photo slideshows or videos with only text overlays as original content. It also warns that copyrighted music playing for over one minute puts a video at risk of being muted.

How long should a YouTube Short be to make money?

YouTube Help says a Short can be up to 3 minutes long, with a square or vertical aspect ratio. YouTube's page on three-minute Shorts says videos uploaded after October 15, 2024 that meet those rules count as Shorts.

YouTube does not pay by length. The YouTube Partner Program opens to channels with 1,000 subscribers and either 10 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days or 4,000 qualified watch hours on long videos in the last 12 months. After that, ad revenue from the Shorts Feed goes into a Creator Pool. YouTube's Shorts monetization policies say monetizing creators keep 45% of their allocated revenue, and payments use engaged views.

One length rule matters. The same policy says Shorts over one minute that contain claimed content are blocked and not eligible for monetization. The three-minute Shorts page says nothing changes for Shorts under one minute. A newer note on the Create YouTube Shorts page says Shorts over one minute with an active copyright claim are no longer blocked automatically and may stay playable. The pages disagree about playback, and none says such a Short can earn. If you use a popular song, keep the Short under one minute.

What studies found about length

Socialinsider analyzed 8,021,416 organic TikTok videos from brand accounts with 1,000 to 1 million followers, posted from January to June 2026. Its TikTok engagement rate is engagement divided by views.

Socialinsider, TikTok length compared with views and engagement, January to June 2026

30 to 45 seconds2,0004.20%

120 to 180 seconds12,0005.50%
Over 180 seconds11,7005.80%

Short TikToks had the highest engagement rate. Longer TikToks reached more people: videos of 2 to 3 minutes averaged ten times the views of videos under 30 seconds.

Buffer saw the same direction in May 2024, from millions of TikToks posted through its app. Videos longer than 3 minutes got more than double the views of 6 to 10 second videos on average, and shorter videos were more often watched to the end. Buffer did not publish the exact counts.

We did not find a public study of Shorts length with published numbers (checked October 2026).

Our advice for each goal

  • You want TikTok rewards: make videos a little over one minute, for example 65 to 90 seconds, so a last trim does not drop them under the line. Give them a real middle: steps of a job, a before and after with the work shown, a story with a payoff. Padding a 30-second idea to a minute loses viewers, and views under 5 seconds do not count.
  • You want Shorts income: views matter more than length. Keep Shorts with a popular song under one minute. Use original sound or music you own for longer ones.
  • You want reach only: keep TikToks under 30 seconds for the highest engagement rate, and see how long a Reel should be for Instagram.
  • One edit for TikTok, Shorts and Reels: 60 to 90 seconds with original music fits all three. It passes TikTok's one-minute rule, stays under the 3-minute limit on Shorts and Reels, and carries no claimed song on Shorts.

Make a 70-second cut in Vidova

Vidova's AI agent edits your own clips on a timeline from a plain request. It can cut on the beat, add word-by-word captions, generate a music track and keep text inside the area each app leaves clear. Name the length in the request.

Example brief
Make a 70-second vertical video from these clips for TikTok and YouTube Shorts. Show the finished room in the first second, then the four steps of the job, then the finished room again. Generate an upbeat music track instead of using a popular song. Add word-by-word captions and keep them inside the area TikTok and Shorts leave clear.

The free plan takes projects up to 1 minute long, so a 70-second cut needs a paid plan. You can start free. Paid plans start at $19 a month, remove the watermark and export up to 4K at 60 fps.
