How long should a Reel be? Best length and limits (2026)
Instagram Reels can run 20 minutes, but only Reels up to 3 minutes reach new viewers. What Instagram says, what a study of 9.7 million Reels found, and what to aim for.
Last updated

The short answer
Aim for 15 to 60 seconds. Instagram's own Reels guide calls 15 to 60 seconds the sweet spot for most formats, and a 2026 Socialinsider study of 9.7 million brand Reels found the most views and the highest engagement at 45 to 60 seconds. Instagram lets you make Reels up to 20 minutes long, but it does not recommend Reels over 3 minutes to people who do not follow you.
Key takeaways
- Instagram's limit is 20 minutes. Reels over 3 minutes are not recommended to new audiences, so they mostly reach your followers.
- Instagram's guide: 3 to 15 seconds for trends and one-liners, 15 to 60 seconds for most Reels, 1 to 3 minutes for walkthroughs.
- Socialinsider, 9,771,822 brand Reels from January to June 2026: views and engagement peaked at 45 to 60 seconds and fell sharply after 3 minutes.
- Instagram sets no minimum Reel length for earning money.
Reel length limits from Instagram
These are the numbers Instagram and Meta publish. We checked each page in October 2026.
| What | Length | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Longest Reel you can record and edit in the app | 20 minutes | Instagram Help: record a reel |
| Longest Reel recommended to people who do not follow you | 3 minutes | Instagram Help: record a reel |
| Quick transitions, trends and punchy one-liners | 3 to 15 seconds | Instagram's Reels guide |
| The sweet spot for tutorials, day-in-my-life clips and most creative formats | 15 to 60 seconds | Instagram's Reels guide |
| Longer storytelling, walkthroughs or detailed how-tos | 1 to 3 minutes | Instagram's Reels guide |
| Reels posted through Instagram's API, for example by a scheduling app | 3 seconds to 15 minutes | Meta developer docs |
| Reels ads | 0 seconds to 15 minutes | Meta Ads Guide |
The pages do not all agree. Instagram's Help Center says you can record and edit Reels up to 20 minutes. Instagram's own Reels guide still says Reels run from 3 seconds to 3 minutes. Both point to the same number for reach: the Help Center says Reels over 3 minutes are not recommended to new audiences.
That 3-minute line dates from January 2025, when Instagram's creator blog said Reels up to 3 minutes are eligible to be seen by non-followers in places like the Reels tab and Explore.
What a study of 9.7 million Reels found
Socialinsider analyzed 9,771,822 organic Reels from brand accounts with 1,000 to 1 million followers, posted from January to June 2026. It grouped the Reels by length and compared views and engagement. Its engagement rate is likes plus comments divided by followers. The study was published in July 2026 and updated on October 20, 2026.
| Reel length | Views per Reel | Engagement rate |
|---|---|---|
| 0 to 30 seconds | 4,700 | 0.28% |
| 30 to 45 seconds | 8,564 | 0.30% |
| 45 to 60 seconds | 10,374 | 0.35% |
| 60 to 90 seconds | 9,790 | 0.30% |
| 90 to 120 seconds | 8,000 | 0.30% |
| 120 to 180 seconds | 9,000 | 0.33% |
| Over 180 seconds | 4,428 | 0.15% |
Two results stand out. Reels under 30 seconds got less than half the views of Reels at 45 to 60 seconds. Reels over 3 minutes got the fewest views and about half the engagement rate of every shorter group. That matches Instagram's rule that long Reels are not shown to new audiences.
The study shows which lengths did well. It does not show that length caused the result. Accounts that post 50-second Reels may also post different content. Treat it as a starting point and compare it with the numbers in your own Insights.
How long should a Reel be to go viral?
No length makes a Reel go viral. Length decides which audiences Instagram can show it to and how long people must stay. Keep a Reel at 3 minutes or less if you want reach beyond your followers. Inside that limit, 45 to 60 seconds had the most views in the Socialinsider data, and Instagram suggests 15 to 60 seconds for most formats.
The first second matters more than the total length. Instagram's Reels guide says a strong opening line of text in the first frame can be just as powerful as a great thumbnail. Cut everything before the main subject appears.
For openings that hold people, see how to write video hooks that stop the scroll.
How long should a Reel be to be monetized?
Instagram sets no minimum Reel length for earning money. Its earn money page for creators lists subscriptions, gifts, badges, partnership ads, the Creator Marketplace and bonuses that reward the performance of Reels, carousels and single image posts. None of these names a length (checked October 2026).
Other apps do set a length for pay. TikTok's Creator Rewards Program counts only videos of at least one minute. The details are in how long a TikTok or YouTube Short should be.
Our advice: pick the length from the content
The list below is our advice. It follows the numbers above.
- 7 to 15 seconds: one trend, one reveal or one before and after.
- 30 to 60 seconds: a tip, a product demo or a short story with a payoff. Most Reels should aim here.
- 1 to 3 minutes: a walkthrough, a recipe or a tour of a house or a shop. Every step must earn its place.
- Over 3 minutes: content for followers only, such as a full class or a long interview.
Write the edit to the shortest length that tells the whole story. Then cut pauses, repeated lines and slow starts. A 70-second draft often makes a stronger 45-second Reel.
Cut a Reel to a set length in Vidova
In Vidova you describe the Reel and an AI agent edits your clips on a real timeline. It can cut pauses and filler words, cut on the beat of the song and add animated captions. Name the length you want, and ask for a second version if you want to compare.
Make a 45-second vertical Reel from these clips. Show the finished cake in the first second, then the three main steps, then the cake again with the shop name. Cut every pause. Then make a 15-second version that keeps only the first shot, the best step and the end.
Vidova keeps versions of a project, so both cuts stay side by side. You can start free. Paid plans start at $19 a month, remove the watermark and export up to 4K at 60 fps.
