The short answer

Edits is the better pick if you make Reels on your phone: it is free, has no watermark, exports in 4K and posts straight to Instagram. CapCut is the better pick if you also edit on a computer or in a browser, or want a large library of templates and effects, but 4K export and some effects need CapCut Pro. InShot is a simpler phone editor with ads in its free version and a $49.99 lifetime upgrade.

Key takeaways

  • Edits is free and runs only on iPhone and Android phones. Its store listing says it exports in 4K with no watermark.
  • CapCut runs on the web, Windows, Mac, iPhone, iPad and Android. Its help center says 4K, 60 fps and watermark-free export can be locked on desktop without Pro.
  • InShot Pro costs $4.99 a month, $19.99 a year or $49.99 once in the US App Store, checked October 2026.

How we compared Edits, CapCut and InShot

We read each app's own website, help center and store listings on October 27, 2026. US prices come from the US App Store, because CapCut and Meta do not publish one price list for every country. We did not run speed or quality tests, so this page compares what each vendor documents.

Edits is Meta's video editor for Instagram creators. CapCut is ByteDance's editor. InShot is an older phone editor that many people compare with Edits. Vidova is our product, and it is a different kind of tool, so it gets its own short section at the end.

What Edits does well

Edits is built for one job: making Reels on a phone. You log in with your Instagram account, and Meta describes it as "an app for editing and creating videos right on your phone". The Edits website promises "high-quality exports with no watermark", and the help center says a downloaded video can be posted anywhere "watermark free".

  • Camera. You record clips up to 10 minutes long and choose HD, 2K or 4K, the frame rate and the color setting before you record. The camera has a teleprompter, a timer, green screen and skin retouching.
  • Timeline. Every text, music, voice or effect layer is its own clip that you drag and trim. Clip tools include split, speed, slip, replace and duplicate.
  • Color and audio. The Adjust tool has white balance, HSL, color wheels and curves. The audio library has trending and royalty-free music, and you can import your own.
  • Captions. Edits generates captions, lets you pick the spoken language and the style, and has a bilingual caption option.
  • AI. Restyle regenerates a clip of up to 10 seconds in a new style with Meta AI. You can also animate a still image and cut a person out of the background.
  • Instagram link. You can save a draft straight to Instagram, see live insights for reels you posted, and add link overlays to other reels that only work when you export from Edits.

The downsides are clear. Edits has no desktop or web version, so all editing happens on a phone screen. Edits Plus, the paid plan with 200 GB of cloud storage and more AI use, is in limited testing, and its sync works only between devices on the same platform, for example iPhone to iPhone.

What CapCut does well

CapCut is the broader editor. It runs as CapCut Online in the browser, CapCut Desktop on Windows and Mac, and as apps for iPhone, iPad and Android. The App Store listing lists keyframes for all settings, smooth slow motion with optical flow, chroma key, stabilization and a multitrack timeline.

CapCut's AI features go further than Edits. Video Studio builds a video from a short chat, and a CapCut plugin for the ChatGPT desktop app can make a draft and change its timeline from chat. CapCut says availability of that plugin varies by app version, account and region.

The limits are in the paywall. CapCut's help center says that on desktop, the 4K, 60 fps and "No Watermark" export options appear grayed out or locked for users without Pro. On mobile, it asks for Pro to export videos longer than 15 minutes, and that limit varies by region. Free exports have no watermark unless you use premium templates, effects or stock, and you can delete the short CapCut ending clip that some templates add. The price of Pro "can vary depending on your region, device, and available promotions".

InShot vs Edits

InShot is a phone editor with 500M+ downloads on Google Play. Compared with Edits, it adds keyframe animation, speed curves, chroma key, smart tracking for text and stickers, and AI Cut, which removes silences, filler words and breaths. Its iPhone app also runs on Macs with Apple silicon, which Edits does not.

Edits has no ads and costs nothing. InShot's free version shows ads, and InShot Pro costs $4.99 a month, $19.99 a year or $49.99 once in the US App Store. InShot's own pages do not say when a free export carries a watermark, so check that in the app before you post. If your Reels are mostly talking to the camera with captions, Edits covers it for free. If you want silence removal and more control over motion, InShot is worth a look.

Which one should you use?

  1. You post Reels from your phone and want no cost and no watermark: use Edits.
  2. You edit on a laptop or in a browser, or switch between devices: use CapCut. Read whether Edits works on a PC or Mac for other computer options.
  3. You want templates, trending effects and keyframes everywhere: use CapCut, and budget for Pro if you need 4K on desktop.
  4. You cut talking-head clips and want silences removed automatically on a phone: try InShot.
  5. You use Canva for your brand already: see Canva vs CapCut for Reels.

Whichever app you use, check that captions and titles stay clear of the Instagram buttons. Our free safe zone checker shows them on your own frame.

Where Vidova fits

Edits, CapCut and InShot are manual editors: you place each clip and caption yourself. Vidova is built around an AI agent. You upload your clips, describe the Reel, and the agent cuts it on a multitrack timeline, adds word-by-word captions and titles, previews frames of its own work and runs a quality check before it hands the cut over. You can then change any clip by hand or ask for changes in plain words.

Example brief
Make a 20-second Reel for my phone shop from these three clips. Open on the new phones on the wall, cut to me talking, add word-by-word captions from what I say, put the shop name in big type at the end, and keep all text clear of the Instagram buttons.

Vidova runs in the browser on desktop and phone. There is no iPhone or Android app yet. The free plan adds a watermark, exports at 720p and takes projects up to 1 minute long, so for free, watermark-free phone edits Edits is the better choice. You can start free. Paid plans start at $19 a month, remove the watermark and export up to 4K at 60 fps. The Vidova vs CapCut comparison goes into more detail.
