Automatic zoom screen recording is a two-step process. First the app captures the display and the mouse. Then it decides which moments deserve a punch-in and how the camera should move while zoomed. This article explains that second step as Vidova implements it. Other vendors differ. We do not speak for them.

Vidova records cursor positions and click events with the screen. After capture it builds zoom clips on a zoom layer. Each clip covers a cluster of left-clicks that happened near each other. The zoom starts slightly before the first click so the move has settled when the action lands, and it holds after the last click so you can see the result.

Why stillness is a bad zoom signal

The cursor sits still while you talk, read, and think. Early versions of "follow the mouse" treated that rest as intent. The timeline filled with zooms every couple of seconds. Viewers got motion sickness. The current rule is simpler: a click earns consideration. Idle rest does not.

Click clustering

Clicks that are close in time and in screen space belong to one task: filling a form, confirming a dialog, toggling a row of checkboxes. Clicks that are seconds apart, or on opposite corners of the display, start a new shot.

A single click is often you passing through. Vidova requires a small burst before it spends a zoom. The last click of the recording is dropped. That press is usually Stop, not a UI moment you meant to showcase.

Zooms that would cover most of the clip are thinned. If everything is zoomed, nothing is emphasis.

Camera paths after the punch-in

Once a zoom exists, the camera can hold or follow:

  • Steadicam: long still holds, then one move. Clicks stay near centre. Default for product demos.
  • Director: still on a region, then cut-like moves to the next. Fits tutorials.
  • Anchor: frozen until the cursor leaves a centre zone.
  • Momentum: continuous drift toward the cursor.

Click-follow can start moving before the click, and it punches further only when the click would sit outside the current view. Nearby edge clicks can share one hold instead of pulsing in and out.

Automatic zoom versus manual zoom

Automatic zoom proposes shots. Manual zoom is you drawing a region. Vidova supports both on the same layer. Use automatic for the 80 percent that is "I clicked this inspector." Use manual when you need to show a tooltip that never received a click.
